Optical components for printed circuit boards

In order to transmit large amounts of data over short distances - such as in a mobile phone - printed circuit boards with integrated optical transmission are called for. Ruth Houbertz-Krauß of the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research has found a viable solution: she modified Ormorcers to meet the requirements of the two-photon absorption process. This allows three-dimensional microstructures to be written directly in the material - prerequisite for the optical transmission of data over short distances.

Ceramic foam bioreactor

A team of researchers at the TU Berlin has managed to develop a ceramic foam using aluminium oxide which creates ideal conditions for the growth of human and animal cells. The ceramic has open pores and is surrounded by nutrient solution. Using this system the scientists hope in future to cultivate cell tissue and organs for medical treatments.
