New quantum effect for faster computers

Physicists at Würzburg University have demonstrated the previously unknown quantum spin Hall effect. This new technology allows the information in modern storage media to be transported and manipulated without loss, meaning that in future, computers may be able to work at high speed without warming up first.

Hope for multiple sclerosis sufferers

When the immune system attacks its host this usually has dreadful results. In the case of multiple sclerosis, the target of this misguided immune defence is the central nervous system. Scientists at the Max Planck Institute of Neurobiology and the Institute of Clinical Neuroimmunology at Munich University, together with an international team, have now uncovered a new mechanism by which the illness attacks.
