The EU Ministers of Research have come to an agreement: the new European Institute of Technology (EIT) will be founded in 2008. The objective and main task of the EIT will be to boost innovation in areas of particular economic and social interest to Europe by interdisciplinary strategic research and training. As the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, commented, "Outstanding quality needs a hallmark, and Europe is lacking a strong European Institute of Technology bringing together the best brains and enterprises and disseminating the results in the whole of Europe."
As well as the Administrative Council, the EIT will comprise so-called Knowledge and Innovation Communities which will be spread all over Europe. These are integrated partnerships between companies, research institutes and universities. EIT funding will come from various sources including the EU, the Member States and the private sector.
