The retiring President of the German Research Foundation (DFG), Professor Dr. Ernst-Ludwig Winnacker, is to become first Secretary General of the new European Research Council (ERC). This was announced at the end of August by the Scientific Council of the ERC, which is to commence operations as of 2007. ERC Chairman Professor Dr. Fotis Kafatos explained that Winnacker had been chosen thanks to his extensive experience in science and research policy, stressing in particular his successful nine-year term as DFG President. In the initial phase, from January 2007 on, the future Secretary General will be dealing with the fundamental tasks of setting up the ERC and developing its strategic orientation. Its concept has been "made in Germany", as it were. As a best practice example of a science funding organisation, the DFG has been the inspiration for the ERC's structure and modus operandi.
