Young high potentials from all over the world are to be attracted by an English-language Internet portal aimed at rousing people's curiosity about Germany that was initiated by the German Foreign Office. With constantly updated contents the page provides information about career opportunities and innovative developments in research and science. But it also gives valuable advice on everyday aspects of intercultural life. If I am a non-EU citizen, when do I need a German driving licence? Who addresses whom at what point as "du", and what tip do waiters in German restaurants usually reckon with?
The page is a joint project of the Foreign Office's Internet Editorial Team and the Societäts-Verlag publishing company in Frankfurt am Main. Grant-holders and fellows of the Humboldt Foundation, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Goethe Institute and various science organisations were involved in developing the Internet page and contributed advice on what information is really important for foreigners in Germany. Accounts of what grant-holders and fellows have experienced can also be read at www.young-germany. de. A communication platform offers readers an opportunity for mutual exchange.
